I want to thank the Academy for not considering Na'vi a foreign language," joked Campanella, referring to the language created for the blue aliens in the blockbuster movie "Avatar." Other foreign language films nominated this year included France's gritty prison drama "A Prophet," Peru's mournful entry "The Milk of Sorrow," and Israel's "Ajami," which explores ...

The Best Steak in Buenos Aires

March 4, 2010 – 1:17 pm
IT was over a bowl of delicious, spicy-sweet peanut soup with pesto made from huacatay, or Andean black mint, that I realized the vegetarian diner was now perfectly welcome in Buenos Aires. As a vegetarian traveling in a country where beef takes center stage, I expected my meals to be relegated to an assortment of side dishes — sautéed greens, some variation of potatoes — supplemented by the occasional granola bar. But during a recent visit, I was happily surprised, if not downright triumphant, to discover a cluster of recently opened restaurants serving ...

El Secreto de sus Ojos (The Secret In Their Eyes as the English title sells it) is gaining ground among its rivals in the Best Foreign Language Film category: the Argentine box office hit, praised here and internationally, is silently and slowly achieving an increasing popularity in several Oscar prediction sites and articles. Will it be able to beat apparent-favorite Haneke's "The White Ribbon" or Peru's "The Milk of Sorrow"? Campanella's latest film is a big question mark. Few people have watched it in the United States, as its release is scheduled for April. However, several sites offer the movie to be downloaded and moviegoers and cinema lovers appear to have been fulfilling their tasks when "watching all of the Oscar nominated films" obsession arises: just type the movie name plus a ...
